4 Stars Panasonic HDTV 50G10
Great TV except for the sound quality. Too much buzz in bass and high tones.

OK at lower levels. Bad as volume is increased.

5 Stars Great TV at a decent price
Finally, after a lot of reviews and investigation I decided to purchase this TV. I had been investigating some of the LED models especially the back lit ones from LG and Toshiba. The LG 47LH90 was on sale from Sears at a decent price along with its home theater but somehow it got sold out pretty quickly. Hearing that the LED tv’s match the quality of plasma with lower power consumption I got attracted to them. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the backlit LED’s at a decent price and hence had to fall back to a plasma. Earlier this year I had read raving reviews of Panasonic 50PZ85U and saw that at local Costco for $1299 but it got sold before they discounted the price further. Anyway, the 50PG10 is latest version of the same model and had similar reviews from hometheatermag so I looked at that. After a lot of research, I finally pulled the trigger when Amazon offered very sweet deal during the black friday week. The TV arrived yesterday and I hooked it up with a local antenna (we dont have cable) and a PS3 that also arrived yesterday. I was worried about the brightness of the TV – if it would be good enough as the reviews in general complained about it. Fortunately, I had no issues with the brightness and it was pretty decent for the ambient lighting I had at my place. I tried netflix streaming (Pan’s Labyrinth) through PS3 and found that the quality was amazing – later realized that netflix uses HD when the equipment supports HD. Next I tried my favorite Gladiator DVD and Resident Evil (2nd part). Gladiator has very rich colors and the first battle scene gives a pretty good idea about the quality of the tv. Again, I was pleased with what I saw in the THX mode. The Vivid mode had better brightness but caused to wash out certain areas. Next, I reviewed the fight in the church scene from Resident Evil and capability of the tv amazed me in terms of handling the contrast. Most of the other tv’s never could handle the contrast of this scene very well.

In all, I am very impressed with this TV so far. It also seems that PS3 has very good upconversion for DVD’s. I will post more after review some of my favorite movies that would test this unit. In particular, here are the movies that I am going to review:

Spiderwick Chronicles

Narnia

Spiderman 3

Beowulf

Underworld Evolution

Golden Compass

Ice Age 2

Cars

5 Stars Best $1000.00 We Ever Spent
This is our first ever hi-def TV, and at the same time we bought it, we also bought a Blu-Ray player.

Neither my wife or I are “extreme” users of this kind of equipment and we really haven’t explored all the technical aspects of this thing. But frankly how our computer looks over it or what kind of lighting and color adjustments it has wasn’t our primary purpuse in buying it to begin with. We bought it to watch TV and DVD’s on. No doubt we’ll be exploring the breadth of capabilities in the future (in particular renting movies on line), but our primary purpose will always remain the same.

That said, we were blown away by this thing right out of the box! We’ve made no adjustments to it, and the picture is incredible. We’ve had it about a month now, and we’re still amazed at the clarity and richness of the picture. The contrast between the deep black and the light/color parts is something to behold. And the Blu-Ray….yes, the Blu-Ray. I’ve spent more money on Amazon on these little discs than I care to admit since buying this TV. And although we’ve never done “Guitar Hero” or anything like that, we’re really wondering what fun that would be on this thing.

As for the sound, we can’t address that since we have surround sound. And the reflection off the screen is not outta line, but a little more than I expected from the reviews. You may have to adjust where you’re sitting when you watch it if you have a bright light source nearby or else pull the blinds so there’s not much direct light on the screen. But all in all, this is a minor niggle and even in retrospect, wouldn’t have kept me from buying this very fine unit.

All in all, and incredible piece of equipment. Frankly, after having this in our living room, the whole family agrees that unless we absolutely MUST see a first run movie when it first comes out and can’t wait for it to get to the open market, then there’s absolutely no need to ever go to a theater. It’s just that good.

5 Stars I feel I made the right choice. Great TV
If your worried about LCD or Plasma, stop. Either way you get a good picture on both styles of TV. Thanks to all the negative advertising by the competition (Short monitor life and screen burn in) Plasmas have a lower price, and thats good for you. From what I have read online the negatives of owning a plasma have been remedied through technology. Newer plasmas have twice the screen life and built in anti burn in screen savers for inactive TV’s that are left on. I have no worries on my purchase of the Panasonic G10 50″. Great picture at about a $700 savings to a comparable LCD.

5 Stars Excellent TV
First, let me say the tv is amazing. It has to be of the best HDTV avaialable. The picture is amazing and I would absolutely purchase the tv again. The sound is ok, but I usually use a my home theater for the sound, which is a must if you are you are going to buy a Tv of this quality. The picture is best when using a blu-ray, then you really see the difference in picture from anything else. Also sports look incredible and zero blurring the motion is crisp and detailed. The Viera cast is really cool and the picture is very good, but not quite blu-ray. However, the sound is only stereo on viera cast. Also no netflix on the viera cast yet.

I paid for two day shipping and Ceva (the shipping company) did not deliver on time, in fact they were a pain to deal with. I called amazon and asked where the tv was and they called ceva for me and refunded the shipping with out hestitation. The money was refunded within one day. Amazon customer service was great, but ceva was a nightmare to deal with.

3 Stars Beware of Burn-In Issue
This television has a beautiful picture, the price is very reasonable, but you need to be aware that you cannot watch programs in the old 4:3 format. This TV is very sensitive to burn-in! I like to watch regular television programs and most old tv shows are in the old format. I only had it about 2 weeks and noticed the bars down both sides of the television. I ran the scrolling feature and made sure to now stretch the shows to wide fit, which cuts off some of picture on the top and bottom. But now I am noticing that the logos from the tv stations on the bottom right or left show images. Also, it is not a good tv to play video games on for the same reason. After short periods of time you see imaging from the score bars of the game. And I have the screen protection option on at the fastest setting. I am returning this television and going back to an LCD. The reason I went plasma was because for the same picture quality and other options the price was lower. I got this television for about $1,000. I am going to go to a 46″ LCD and spend a little more. In my opinion, it is just not worth the headache of worrying about screen burn-in! I have this television a little less than a month. What is the screen going to look like 6 months or a year from now? How many shadows are going to become permanent?

5 Stars Nice TV
Great Price Great TV.

The sound is OK, having external speakers makes it much nicer.

5 Stars Nice TV for the money…
I like this TV. Very elegant design and it matches perfect with my home theater…

no problems with it and the delivery service was 5 stars as well, Nice delivery company Amazon…

4 Stars Its a plasma…a damn good one…but its still a plasma
This TV is amazing and it has a lot of sweet picture enhancing features like dynamic contrast and a few burn in reduction settings. HOWEVER, it overscans and there is no option to turn that off…and there is still burn in (limitation of plasmas in general). The speakers that are built in kinda suck…but who in their right mind would use those over a real home theater set up?

4 Stars Worth the price
Very I am very happy with this TV, especially at this price. Just be sure to have HD with it. Regular channels kind of look like crap.

5 Stars Awesome!
Picture quality is unbelievable. I love the built in art gallery. Looks like a wall painting. Very thin. No buzzing sound. I turned the volume all the way to 0 and still did not hear any buzz. So they may have fixed that issue for my TV. Coolest feature was… it was able to play most of my videos right from an external hard drive. Now I can have all my home videos and pictures in one external hard drive. I have not used the internet feature yet.

Overall a great TV. I feel this TV is same or better than samsung LED’s in picture quality and still is very thin 1.2″

5 Stars Samsung PN50B860 …no buzzing noise … Fantastic !!!
Have watched this one for over 3 weeks no. So far so good. No buzzing noise. If I put my ear 2-4 inches from the screen, there is a humming sound, which I think is normal for all plasma TV. I am not using it in a media room so not an issue.

My set is in a bright south-facing family room. It sits next to a 12 ft wide window. The reflection is tolerable during the day. The screen coating must have done a good job.

I have considered other flat panel sets, plasma, LCD (LED back lighting/local dimming included), this set is just far superior in the key performance areas that I put most weights on:

- Image quality at high/low light (color accuracy and deep black with some minor adjustment)

- Minimal degradation at wide viewing angle (more than 50 degree)

- Good representation of fast moving objects

- Ability to play mpeg-4/H.264 avi video clips. It works great with my Sanyo camcorder’s 1920×1080 60p fps clips.

Set up Burn Protection right away out of the box. After 150 – 200 hrs use, it should be taken care of. It runs a little hotter than LED LCD TV but not a huge issue in a large family room. The style looks elegant while not bold.

In my opinion, it is simply the best looking and performing flat panel set at 3K and below. Amazon’s price makes it an even sweeter. just in time for holidays.

FYI – Manufacture Date on my unit is Oct 2009.

5 Stars Simply Perfect
This TV is the most beautiful TV I have ever seen. There is however a buzzing noise….if your house is silent and your head is between the TV and the wall. Anybody who complains obviously doesn’t have the sound turned on, because even whisper quiet noise will drown out any minor buzzing…if you own a refrigerator, you will not be able to hear the buzzing. The only REAL flaw was the delivery company Amazon chose, CEVA Logistics. They never showed up on the scheduled delivery date, so we rescheduled. The new date, they called and said they couldn’t make the original time, so they rescheduled for later in the day. They were supposed to arrive between 1 and 5, they didn’t arrive until after 7pm. Forget about white glove service, the driver was in a rush to drop the box and run. Him and his partner had no idea how to set the TV up, and when they started getting fingerprints all over the screen I kicked them out. Terrible experience that was quickly forgotten as soon as I set the TV up. SO 5 stars for Samsung, 0 stars for CEVA Logistics, 1 star for amazon for choosing such a crappy company and only offering me $50 for my trouble!

5 Stars Most Accurate Picture Among HDTVs
First, a reality check – I totally cannot believe the complaints on this page about buzzing. I’ve had my set since mid-September and haven’t noticed any buzz beyond what is typical for plasma sets. If you stand right next to any plasma or CRT set you WILL here a tiny buzz or humm, period.

Now on to my assessment – I spent months researching before deciding on this set over the V10 that I had tentatively decided on until I saw the two side-by-side. The 860 blew it out of the water! There is no comparison when it comes to color accuracy. The V10 seems to give everything, including skintones a slightly green hue and the overall picture seems dull by comparison. Both sets (in my opinion) had excellent black levels but the experts say the V10’s are darker but I couldn’t tell! I also love the DNLA link that allows viewing photos, movies and listening to music directly from my pc (wirelessly). I love it. And I cannot overstate how it’s superior picture outshined all others in the BB Magnolia showroom, including the much-lauded Pioneer Kuro.

Full disclosure would dictate that the slightly lower price on the Samsung also entered into my decision. It also entered into my decision to go with this set over the somewhat smaller LEDs from Samsung which also have a decent picture but don’t hold up at off angles.

Finally, I think everyone should narrow their search to 2 or 3 sets and try your best to view them side-by-side before puchasing.

5 Stars Excellent – and none of that buzz!
It does look like LCD TVs are winning the battle for market share. Almost all my friends have chosen LCD TVs over Plasma sets. I find this strange because the newer plasma TVs (like this one) are such amazing value for money, that I am surprised people aren’t lining up to buy this.

Definitely, the issue about the buzzing noise has scared people away (I know I was mildly concerned). Then there is the FUD about image retention and screen burn-in (which also is a non-issue with newer plasma screens).

The fact is that both the issues mentioned above have been pretty much taken care of by technological advances. (You would need to display a static image for weeks to cause burn-in on these TVs).

What remains though is the public’s perception that plasma TVs are somehow inferior to LCD TVs – and that shows up in the markup that people are willing to pay for a comparable LCD TV of the same size and brand.

Their loss is my (and your) gain. I did the analysis and purchased this set at an incredible price point and I couldnt be happier about this purchase.

So here is what I think about the PN50B860.

Pros

+ THE best value for money. Period.

+ Looks fantastic. Appears thinner than the claimed 1.2 inches

+ Picture Quality is fantastic – and this includes SD content.

+ NONE of that buzzing noise that some people experienced.

+ Internet connectivity is good for updating firmware.

+ Nice and organized menus

+ Lightweight compared to its peers (only 55 lbs without the stand)

Cons

- Yahoo widgets are super sluggish

- Menus are sluggish

Bottomline:

Go for it.

5 Stars Incredible Picture Incredible Value
Bought this TV on the advise of a high-end video fanatic friend when I told him I wanted a great TV on a small budget. The picture quality is phenominal! The set-up was easy and the whte-glove delivery folks were excellent. The process could not have been easier. The sound quality of the built-in speakers is poor, however. While waiting for my new AV receiver to arrive I tried connecting my subwoofer alone to the TV and the change was dramatic. With a real AV set-up the theatrical experience is amazing.

I connected the TV via ethernet to take advantage of the Viera Link functionality. It works very well and is easy to set up and intuitive to use. I rented an Amazon HD movie and found the experience to be flawless – no digital chatter and an almost non-existant buffer period. It’s too bad there aren’t better controls for FF, rewind, etc but you can still pause. Also, the YouTube experience via Viera Link is quite good.

Overall a fantastic TV with a picture quality you won’t be able to exceed without spending at least twice as much.

5 Stars FANTASTIC TV
I purchased this TV in June 2009, and it is probably one of the better purchases I have made in a long time. I did a ton of research when looking to purchase a TV, and in all of my research, this had the best picture quality I have seen. The price on this model is not the cheapest, but I have noticed that with HDTV’s, you get what you pay for. I didn’t mind sinking in some additional money when I saw how fantastic the picture quality was.

The presets on the TV aren’t necessarily the best..do a little research on the Internet (type in TC-P46G10 in the search engine of your choice) to learn the settings to get the best picture quality. Once you have these presets done, this TV is amazing!

1 Star Review for Delivery Service Only
I just installed this TV so am not able to comment on the TV itself but I wish to definitely add something regarding the way TV was delivered. The delivery was supposed to be done by Pilot and it is a white glove service but they subcontracted it to somebody else. So far so good but this guy drives up in an old van with my TV lying flat in the van and alone!!! The shipping label mentions “2 men”. This is a 80lb. TV. Nonetheless the delivery guy is supposed to open the package and take the packing materials but he just left it like that in my room..So I must say that it was very unprofessional…I called Amazon and let them know about this..I must say that Amazon’s customer service is very helpful and courteous though.

5 Stars Best Picture I have ever seen in this price range and beyond
Very happy with the overall package, easy to use and I love VieraCast – just hope more apps/options will become available in the future. HD movies from Amazon OnDemand look great on this tv.

A great, contemporary and solid tv stand to match this beauty is Techcraft Bernini Series BG4020 42-Inch Flat Panel TV Stand, v affordable too.

Would buy again and certainly would recommend to others…

5 Stars Great TV for excellent price
An excellent TV, fairly straightforward to use, excellent picture. We wanted to upgrade from a 32″ 720p Vizio to a larger 1080p HDTV in our family room. The better quality LCD TVs quickly exceeded the price of this TV. Plus plasma produces a brighter picture, and with 600Hz refresh rate, there is none of the ghosting or motion blur you sometimes see with LCD TVs. This is upper middle-class in Panasonic’s line-up, and we are delighted. Hooked up to a HD digital cable/DVR box and great picture (other than when the digital signal from our provider has issues). Beautiful picture from Blu-ray discs (BBC PlanetEarth series is absolutely gorgeous). We are really pleased with this after nearly 2 months of use.

The three HDMI ports are quite adequate for our Blu-ray player and cable box. There is still one free if we choose to add another hi-def source.

Panasonic includes VeraCast, which connects to the internet and allows you to see Utube and other internet video. Unfortunately, our home network is wireless, and the connection is coax ethernet. We will need a wireless to ethernet adapter to use the feature. It would have been nice to have a USB port or other option for networking.

The set is also Energy Star, although we don’t have a sense of energy usage yet. The set is highly rated elsewhere.

5 Stars Outstanding Picture Quality And Price
Yo-

After a lot of reading and in-store comparisons of the Panasonic, LG and Samsung Plasmas – we decided on the 58 inch Panasonic S1.

It turned out to be an outstanding choice at a outstanding price point.

No dead pixels and a sharp – color correct picture.

Clearly superior to any LCD that we looked at – including the LED back-lit ones for twice the price.

We got a four year Square Trade in-home extended warranty for two hundred thirty four.

Would recommend to anyone looking for an excellent HDTV for a reasonable price.

5 Stars Outstanding TV
I was bouncing between this tv and one of the Samsung’s (550/560) models, I was very concerned about getting a Samsung buzzer or having a greenish tint on the Panny I scoured the internet for all the reviews I could find. I was still having a tough time making up my mind on which one to go with. I made a couple of trips to the store and both brand’s PQ looked great to me, but looking and listening to a tv in the store is not the same as having it in your own home. Anyway last week, Bestbuy put this Panasonic on sale for $1499 and my mind was made up for me. I am still on cloud9 with this TV, the picture is unbelievable, no greenish tint in any of the modes, although I have kind of settled on the Standard mode right now (still tweaking with custom). I can’t comment on the sound as I turned off the speakers right away, which is a nice feature. PS3 games and Blu-ray on this tv are mindblowing! 1080i & 720p is also outstanding. This set replaced a 2yr old Toshiba DLP and the strides made in the last 2 years are just hard to comprehend. Also the case on this tv is beautiful, it just showcases the room, that shiny hi gloss piano black finish just grabs your eyes. Well hope this helps out others who may be twisting like I was, on picking a set. I also looked at the LED’s but when you get in to the bigger real estate the price was just too much for me.

5 Stars Panasonic First-Timer
I did a TON of research looking for the right TV, and after careful consideration I picked up the S1 58″ Viera Plasma by Panasonic. Almost a month later and I am still thrilled to own it.

First of all, let me give you a little background (hopefully you gauge my rating credibiltiy here). I watch a lot of sports, love a good action movie (usually a love story if my wife is also watching) and I am an active gamer with my PS3. When I did my research, I wanted a TV that was great in every category, not just movies, not just gaming, etc.

The Panasonic S1 provides an amazing picture quality. The contrast is incredible, the color is everything you could ask for, and even the glare is minimal for a plasma. One other HUGE thing to look for, the Panasonic plasma scored superbly on -the Blacks. I was watching a show the other night and noticed the blacks were SO dark that I could not tell the difference between the border of the TV and black in the picture of the show. This is a huge advange over LCDs, and especially true on this TV.

Setup was very easy. There are so many HDMI inputs on the back of this you will want to go buy more stuff! There is only one digital optical audio out, so you may want to invest in a good audio receiver if you dont have one.

The TV is VERY HEAVY. I bought a decent wall mount on amazon for $25 bucks, works great. Just make sure you use the wall studs, and have at least 3 strong men help you lift the TV.

All said and done, I am extremely happy with this TV. I highly recommend it.

5 Stars Great product, fantastic image quality, super price
We had the Panasonic Viera S1 Series TC-P58S1 for a over a week now. It just can’t be beat! Panasonic quality, great picture, wonderful build quality. Truly a showpiece in your home. If you are going to purchase a TV in this price range it would be silly to buy a smaller TV. Its just so dramatic watching a BluRay DVD on a 58 inch screen in your home. We have had no problem at all, color and picture quality is correct. It comes complete with a nice back lit remote. The screen and quality feel of this TV will certainly make you glad you choose this TV.

5 Stars Awesome TV
I’ve had this set for almost one month now and, so far, I have been very happy with my decision. I think the picture quality is amazing. I haven’t pushed the sound much because I generally route through my surround so I can’t comment too much on that. The set up is easy. I’ve sampled HDTV, standard tv, Blu-ray and video games and they’ve all been pretty awesome. My only complaint with the set up is that there’s only 3 HDMI ports. I’ve got Blu-ray surround, HDTV cable box, Wii, Xbox and PS3 all hooked up to this set currently. Now Wii isn’t HD so that wasn’t an issue going through component but I had to choose between Xbox and PS3 as I chose to use the other 2 HDMI’s for the cable and the Blu-ray. I ended up putting the Playstation through the third and the Xbox through component cables only because I’m playing PS3 more right now. Also, I’m not techie enough to be able to see the difference between HDMI and good component cables so not a huge deal to me. If you are, this may be an issue if you’re hooking up a lot of stuff.

The price was great, the set up was easy and the quality so far is awesome. I would recommend this if you’re in the market. I was debating between this and the 65 inch and I’m actually happy I stayed at 58. This size is perfect. (I view from about 10 feet)

The only other thing I could whine about is the stand. It’s that shiny, glossy type of stand that shows every speck of dust so you’ll want to have a stock of shams around. If you’re mounting it, no big whoop.

I primarily watch sports and action movies as well as play high frame rate games (COD MW2 right now) and there have been no issues with transitions and the clarity is amazing. If I’m going to watch the Lions get their tails kicked each and every week, I may as well see it like I’m there.

2 Stars Bought yesterday Returning tomorrow
Read good reviews about this television. We were excited when we purchased one of the last in the store. Installation was simple. To bad we could not get a clear picture. This was the blurriest tv I have ever watched. The price, the size, the installation all make it a worthwile purchase. The picture quality destroys that very quickly.

5 Stars Best Bang For Your Buck
I got this TV from Amazon at $899.00. And I couldn’t be more pleased.

First off, the TV has an amazing picture. It may look blurry if you don’t give it a high-def signal, but I can attest that the picture is amazing. The first thing I watched was Shrek the Halls and I was amazed at the detail I could see in the wood of Shrek’s outhouse for example. Donkey’s hairs on his back. I just sat there and watched in awe!

I wanted to test the sound and the TV is loud enough for my basement. I was going to buy a new Onkyo receiver to go with it, but now I think I can wait because the TV’s two speakers are enough for now. Most of the time I have the volume at 20%.

I like how the TV has an anti-burn-in mode too, so just in case your video game burns an image into the screen, you just run the anti-burn-in process and take care of it. I think it’s unlikely you get burn-in with today’s TVs, but just in case–there’s something there to help.

The picture brightness is great. I heard someone say that you should keep your plasma pretty dim for its first 30 hours of use to prevent burn-in. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I have it at 30% brightness right now and it’s plenty to see what’s going on. I will start bringing up the brightness this weekend for the Big XII Title Football game–but until then, 30% brightness is more than sufficient.

Cons: I wish there were an easy button to switch between sources on the TV. Like a HDMI1 button or a Component 2 button. There are five colored buttons on the remote that I’m not sure what they do–maybe they can be programmed for the sources…we’ll see.

I can’t think of any more cons. Some said the TV gets hot. I’ve been trying to monitor that and I haven’t felt that it is any hotter than normal. I guess people are used to cold TVs? It gets warm, but not “hot.”

As a comical side note, I’ve been scared about power usage for plasmas, since I hear they use so much more than an LED or LCD. I expected my lights to dim or a fuse to blow after I plugged it in and turned it on. Nothing happened.

I love this TV. It’s a great buy. And it’s a Samsung. Well done, Samsung.

5 Stars Great picture, a great deal
I purchased this from Crutchfield for $899, no tax, no shipping charges. It was delivered to my door. I hooked it up to the hi-def cable box, my surround amp via optical cable and to my blue ray via HDMI. It is an amazing picture! My Samsung blue ray bd-p3600 has a wireless internet connection for Netflix, Pandora and PC streaming. The PC streaming is not working yet, there is some router settings that need to be adjusted and I am clueless. Otherwise, all is amazing; black blacks, details and true, rich colors. I am a very happy camper and so are my friends who now want to come here for movie night.

1 Star Worst TV ever
Do not purchase this tv. Go the extra mile and get an LCD. this was my first Plasma purchase, and i will NEVER do it again. I only purchased this tv because it was a good deal for such a large tv. Standard definition tv looks as good as any other; but the High Def picture is awful. I MEAN AWFUL. don’t make the same mistake i did.

5 Stars Man O’ Man what a TV
Ok I was worried because there wasn’t any other reviews on this TV. Still took a chance cause how can you beat a 50″ HDTV 1080P for $899. no shipping no tax.

Pilot delivered it and even offered to set up for me, but I wasn’t ready for the setup so I declined.

Hook-up was a breeze. I have Direct-TV HD and used the HDMI hook-ups and connected the fiber optic audio to my Pioneer 7.1 channel THX receiver. I hooked up my Sony 400 disc DVD player also with HDMI and fiber audio line.

I placed my leather recliner 10 feet back. Got the remote and turned those suckers on. First I watched HD news and could literally count every blemish on the news people faces. Couric needs to get a new makeup artist.

Then I switched to Discovery HD, I literally jumped when a tiger chased an Antelope through the grasslands, hell you could see the spurt of blood as he sank them fangs. I turned on the DVD player and watched Scrooge and it was fabulous.

The picture was outstanding,so to test it further I turned all the lights on and opened the sun room shades at noon. The picture didn’t change at any angle. No more fighting over the middle seat in this house.

The best thing of all is how little electricity it uses. I tested the usage compared to my old Samsung and it used three quarters less electricity. I saved enough money on the price that I bought the extended warranty and a blue-ray DVD player. I won’t ever leave the house again! (PS I know some of you think the extended warranty is a waste but for $84. and my previous experience with Samsung it’s worth it).

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars great tv, well worth the money
If you have been reading reviews on dozens of different televisions like I did before I bought this baby, you can stop after reading this one because I assure you that you will have no regrets about buying this tv. Don’t be scared by the plasma naysayers regarding image retention and burn in. I have played 4-5 hours straight of call of duty on this sucker with no trace of image retention. Just make sure you break it in for the first 100 hours with full screen HD channels only or with slides that you can download off the av forum. Bottom line is this tv rocks. Blue Ray looks amazing. Sports in HD are incredible. I don’t know why anyone would go to the game in person because you can see it for free in your home and see more of the action. You will want to get a plasma screen cleaner for this one though because fingerprints do leave their mark on the screen when you are setting it up. I have mine mounted on a stand I picked up at Target for $200 and it works fine. Panasonic is a good quality manufacturer, so you don’t have to worry about buying this tv. It should last for many years and I don’t think you will be disappointed.

5 Stars Great TV!
I spent forever researching my first big screen TV. I finally settled on this one because, first, I really wanted a plasma because motion blur really drives me nuts. At 240 Hz refresh, I’m sure the newer LCDs are better but I still like the plasma. Secondly, I bought this one for its ability to process all the latest and greatest video and audio and interface with my computer and ‘net. In other-words, I thought this on had the best shot of keeping up with technology as long as possible.

The picture quality is fine. I do not necessarily notice the color distortion spoken of in the reviews although I have not yet viewed a BluRay but I have downloaded HD movies and played them. I am somewhere between an casual viewer and a videophile. The connectivity is great; I am using all HDMI and Digital Optical (buy these through Amazon – the local stores charge and arm and a leg!) The menus are easy to use and the set up was pretty easy. The antireflection coating works quite well IMO. I have only one complaint but this is probably universal with antireflection coated screens; that coating is DELICATE. I managed to scratch mine and a replacement glass is $930 + shipping and install and its not currently available anyway. So Be Careful! The audio through the TV is OK for internal speakers.

Overall I am very happy with this TV and recommend it highly.

5 Stars hdtv
pleased with order, picture is great right out of the box with no fine tuning.

5 Stars Just awesome
The Panasonic V10 50″ is just awesome. This was my first HD tv so maybe I’m easy to impress, but all the reviews ([...] and Amazon) agreed that this is an incredible plasma tv. My concern about everyone’s advice saying that LCD’s may be better for a bright room had me a little worried about choosing a plasma. But after having it for a little over a month now, it’s been great. Glare has not been a problem at all. I have it set up next to a wall with windows – only slight glare if trying to watch with full sun through the window. I purchased through Electronics Experience (~$1,700), for a great price and they proved very reliable sellers.

5 Stars Phenomenal Picture out of the Box, Wish it had Netflix and wasn’t so ugly . . .
I’ve owned the TV for about a week and a half now and I can’t wait any longer to write a review. The bottom line is that the picture quality looks absolutely amazing out of the box. HD content looks absolutely incredible. I’d give it six stars if it streamed Netflix (or maybe even if VieraCast had another interesting option) and if it looked a little sharper on Standard Definition content (oh, yeah, and if Amazon let me give it six stars :-) . But at the end of the day, if you’re dropping this kind of money on a TV, you probably have a Blu Ray player and HD cable and you’re going to be blown away by the experience. And I do mean experience — because watching high definition content on this TV is tantamount to a religious experience.

Let me first mention that this is not the TV that I wanted. I wanted the Samsung PN50B860. It is less expensive, it has better streaming options (important for me because I only have Internet service, no cable TV) and it looks a hell of a lot cooler. But I couldn’t get past one review after another that lamented the horrible buzz of the Samsungs and the fact that every independent comparison that I read more or less said that the Samsung’s picture quality was not quite awesome and that this TV was more or less the 2009 king of HDTV. After spending a good deal of time sifting through reviews and staring at screens in the electronics stores, I couldn’t get away from the fact that the picture on the Panasonic TC-P50V10 was not disputed. No one claimed it was less than the best. I should say that I think the styling on this TV is almost downright ugly. It doesn’t hold a candle to the way the Samsung looks. The “one sheet of glass” thing doesn’t do it for me at all. But, my girlfriend gave me the push I needed when she asked me one rhetorical question: Which is going to matter more — the way it looks when it is turned off, or the way it looks when it’s turned on? Sold.

As I don’t have cable television or a Blu-Ray player, my first move was to use VieraCast to watch an HD movie or two (or 7 or 8) via Amazon on Demand. Contrary to the one negative review on here, I found the content to load quickly and the menus to be simple to navigate. I may suggest some changes on Amazon’s end — but nothing I would change on Panasonic’s end. I take that back — there are TWO things I would change on Panasonic’s end. The reason I just decided to change “ease of use” to 4 stars is because of the fact that they grey out some menu options in some playback modes. Why is there not a timer available when the TV is in VieraCast mode?!?? I really want to speed up this first 100 or 200 hour break-in period and it would be really helpful if I could rent a movie and leave it to play and use a timer so it will go off. I’d also like to be able to fall asleep watching a movie now and then as this TV is currently in my bedroom. That is probably my only major complaint about this TV. But that problem is likely not something that will concern most people thinking about buying this set. The other small grievance I have is that when you spend almost seveteen hundred smackers on a TV, can’t it just come wireless out of the box? I still haven’t picked up a wireless access point, so I’m running a stupid ethernet cable up the wall and upstairs to where the TV is. Dumb. But in no way a dealbreaker.

More importantly — picture quality is absolutely superb. I don’t know if I can say enough about it. When I first looked at TVs in a store, the pop of the colors on an LED screen looked really cool to me. Once someone pointed out the terrible exaggeration of the colors (blue smoke coming from a volcano….and pink lava), I realized that the constant brightness might get old after a while. Now that I have this TV, I absolutely realize that this was a correct analysis. I like looking at a bright LCD in the store….but you absolutely can not beat the cinematic quality of the picture on this screen. The colors are rich and deep and it gives a depth to the picture that you just won’t get if the screen is blinding you with light. I actually feel like I’m in a movie theater when I watch this television….and personally, I don’t think you can beat having a movie theater experience at home. I literally order snowcaps by the case here in Amazon and I can sit at home and feel like a king watching this set. And that is keeping it on low settings to break it in — I can’t wait until I am a couple hundred hours in and I tweak the settings. My only picture quality complaint is a small amount of blotchiness in the blacks that I’ve noticed in some dark backgrounds (Gothika and Law & Order). I’ve chalked it up to not being broken in and not being on the top settings (and to the fact that I was streaming those things on the Internet). We’ll see if that improves – and I’ll be sure to come back and update either way. But by and large, you can’t beat the way that the colors in general seem to pop into your lap and make you feel like you are actually inside the movie.

All that said, I have been a little unimpressed with the picture quality when watching some standard-definition content (from Amazon on Demand and from a laptop via HDMI connection). I still haven’t hooked up my regular old DVD player, but my hopes aren’t real high for my old DVDs until I get a good Blu-Ray player that will upconvert them nicely. I look forward to that day . . . because I own more than 500 movies on DVD and a lot of seasons. I definitely do want to enjoy them on my new big screen, and I hope that works out well when I decide on a Blu-Ray player. When I do, I’ll be back to update this.

A note on value — do some shopping around. As I write this on 10/31/09, I can say that I got this TV at a more than twenty-one percent discount from the Amazon price or the price of other big name brick and motar stores. Take a look at some of the retailers who sell on Amazon…..they have their own sites and their own deals. The TV arrived via UPS (sure, no white glove delivery service….but my girlfriend and I were able to carry the TV in and set it up ourselves…it wasn’t worth the extra cost….and even if I had chosen the white-glove service, it still would have been significantly cheaper). Don’t be afraid to call a dealer and ask how much better they can do…..most of them have price-match programs and so on. I did very very little haggling to get the price into the range I wanted. In fact, I really just named the price I wanted to pay and I paid it. Keep that in mind.

Changing gears, I have read a number of complaints about the sound quality of this television. My first thought every time I read this type of comment is “Who drops anywhere near two G’s on a TV and doesn’t either already have or plan to buy a home theater setup? Do these people honestly use the TV’s speakers? Do they expect a TV that is 3 or 4 inches thick to sound like the IMAX?” That said, I don’t have mine hooked up to any type of sound system right now and I have to report that it sounds awesome. As a former DJ who owns a surround system for both home theater and one for a computer (and the necessary pieces to run my computer through the home theater), I have to say that the TV speakers sound pretty darn good to me. Granted, I have the TV in a bedroom at the moment (and not a huge bedroom at that) and my expectations were not IMAX sound. This TV’s built-in sound exceeds my expectations….but I don’t plan to use it for very long — and seriously, neither should you. Buy some sound equipment.

Last, but not least, burn-in/image retention. So far, it’s nonexistent. My girlfriend has driven me a little batty a couple of times by watching YouTube videos without fullscreening them (thereby keeping a static menu on the left for a while). We have slid through hundreds of movies on the Amazon on Demand menus with static images on the top and bottom. We rented one movie from Amazon that was in High Def but was letterboxed (why?!?!? — and why can’t I change the setting and zoom it to get rid of the letterbox when I’m using VieraCast?!?!?). Neither has caused even a HINT of a problem. I’m still being overly cautious whenever I can be…..but I have not had the slightest hint of image retention/burn-in. This seems to be the quality product that one would expect when one spends this kind of money.

All in all, I give the Panasonic TC-P50V10 an emphatic stamp of approval. I’m thrilled with my purchase. I went to the mall last night and cheated on my baby a bit looking at how pretty the Samsungs look….but at the end of the day, my girlfriend was right – I want the TV that knocks my socks off when it’s on. I have heard ZERO sound from the V10 (no buzz) and I have noticed no heat (supposedly all plasmas produce it?). The picture is gorgeous and VieraCast is OK. I look forward to VierCast updates — and if they don’t come, I’ll get a Netflix-enabled Blu-Ray player. You should buy this TV, just don’t pay full price. I know I won’t regret it any time soon.
